St. Alban’s Last Supper Project

During the Lenten season of 2015 I invited members of the St. Alban’s Anglican/Episcopal church in Tokyo to join in a spiritual exercise to re-imagine the emotional crisis of Jesus and his disciples during the Last Supper.  They studied the Gospel texts as well as Leonardo’s painting and performed 11 tableaus where each person was asked to portray each disciple and Jesus, imagining and projecting their emotional state at the moment when Jesus has told them, “that one of you will betray me.”  These photographs capture their performances.

Alternate Images

For these alternate images I asked the person sitting in the “Judas seat” to look into the camera, establishing a direct connection with the viewer.  I find these alternate images quite striking and challenging.

For this next image I asked the participants to imagine that Jesus was trying to tell them something important but that they were too distracted to listen.  In this case, all were looking at their phones.  For the final image I asked everyone to respond to Jesus’ pronouncement in so far that they had just understood his meaning.
